Field Trip

To: Schools and community partners

Childhood obesity in America is a major public health issue. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) is committed to building a healthier future for our state. That’s why we are partnering with schools and communities across the state to get kids moving and eating healthier
.  Since 2004, BCBSM has dedicated more than $3.4 million to childhood obesity prevention through our Building Healthy Communities program, the FIT program in Grand Rapids and other activities.

On Tues., Oct. 5, 2010, as part of our continued commitment to childhood obesity prevention, the Blues will be hosting a special event at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions. The event will celebrate you - our schools and community partners - and will also promote health, wellness and International Walk to School Day, which is the following day — Wed., Oct. 6, 2010.

We invite you, the school staff and your student body to watch and participate in this special event by tuning into a live webcast from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. on Tues., Oct. 5, 2010. While the live event will last a full hour on the field, we anticipate that schools watching the event via UStream will find the first 30 minutes of the event, from 9:30a.m. – 10:00 a.m., most worthwhile.

All you need to do is click on this link at that time, and you’ll be able to watch the event in real-time:

Please note that you’ll need a high-speed Internet connection in order to watch the event. You may want to watch the event in a gym or open room so you and your classes can join in the fun.

During the event, students will be encouraged to participate in some exercises. You may want to broadcast this event in your classroom or have an assembly in the gym, whatever best suits your needs.

If you do plan to virtually participate in our event, please respond to this e-mail at buildhealth2010@bcbsm.com and let us know so that we may be able to recognize your school’s participation during the event.

In good health,

Welcome Letter 2nd Edition

September 14, 2010

Hello students and families of Room 316.  I am so excited about this upcoming school year.  My name is Neil Wetherbee, and this is my 6th year in this classroom.  I attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where I obtained a bachelor's degree in elementary education, and I have a master's degree from Michigan State University in educational technology.  I am highly qualified K-8th grade. There are many familiar names on my class list, but there are also some names that are new to UPA.  I've got many exciting projects planned for the school year, and I am eager to get them started.

This year our class came up with three guidelines in order to help all of our hopes and dreams come true.  We agreed to the following three guidelines:

1.      Try harder than use usually would.

2.      Respect yourself and others.

3.      Stay on point.

You can contact me in any of five ways.  You can call me at school at 313-874-9800.  You can call me at home at 734-239-1642.  Please keep in mind that I have two small children at home who are usually in bed by 8:30.  You can drop in and see me before school.  You don't need an appointment, and I am usually here by 7:30.  You can check out the class blog at classroom316.blogspot.com and post comments there for everyone to see. The best way to contact me is through email.  You can reach me nearly anytime at twetherbee@uprep.com.

I look forward to a wonderful year together where we all can learn and grow as people.

Neil Wetherbee
